How to Pick the Right Attorney

When trying to choose a personal injury lawyer, like from Brandy Austin Law Firm, PLLC, to represent you in a legal matter, you must consider several things before choosing the perfect attorney.  Finding a good attorney may be the most important step you can take towards winning a legal case and it doesn’t have to be a difficult task.  You will, however, need to take your time with the search.  After all, they could be the one aspect of your case that determines what things will look like for you in the future especially if your legal matter is personal or business related.  Taking the time to find the right attorney will be worth it, as they are more likely to help you win your case.  When picking the right attorney, there are a few things that you should consider.

The first thing you need to do is determine what type of attorney you will need.  It is always preferable to locate an attorney who has specialized expertise in the practice area that your case involves.  By making that determination, your mind will be at ease as they have experience in your type of case and will know all the legal steps you need to take to have a successful outcome in your case.  It is also a good idea to find an attorney that is familiar with the courts and the laws of the area in which you live.  This will enable your attorney to best represent your interests.

Once you have made that determination, my next suggestion would be to contact your local bar association to get a list of qualified attorneys in your area.  Most of the State bar associations keep public records about complaints and any disciplinary actions taken against attorneys licensed to practice in the state. Most local bar associations have free referral services that can help you find an attorney to suit your case’s needs.  You can actually speak to a “live” person and they will listen to your specific needs and assist you in your search. The best way to locate information regarding your local bar association would be to do a quick google search for the association in your county or you can find your bar associations website by selecting your state from the State& Local Bar Association page.  The bar association is very helpful and informative.  They are there to assist you and help lower the amount of stress it may cause when picking a lawyer.

After you have received some professional information regarding your choice in attorneys, reach out to your friends and family who have used an attorney in the past.  Find out who they used and if they were happy with the service they provided.  If they were not happy, ask why.  Ask if they can recommend an attorney to you.  Sometimes receiving recommendations from friends and family can be very useful as they may be more candid with you and upfront about their experience.

Once you have made a list of the potential attorneys that interest you, search/review each of those attorneys’ websites.  Look for background information on the attorney, such as his or her law school and areas of specialization.  Most attorney’s websites will provide information about each of the attorneys that work for the firm.  Typically, you should look for an attorney with at least 3 to 5 years of experience practicing the type of law you need help with.  Additionally, you should choose an attorney that currently practices in the area you need help with.

Now, you should be ready to call each law firm and schedule a consultation.  Happy Hunting!
